The ghost as psychic residue: Jung, shadow, mourning and Gothic literature - Welcome to Gothic Land #21

“Welcome to Gothic Land” is a video podcast created by Alice in Gothic Land. It's a place where we analyze the psychology behind Gothic productions and elements so we can find our balance. I help you find equilibrium during transitions by analyzing literary works, television programs, songs, and other artistic representations. In other words, an analysis of Gothic psychology.

When we talk about ghosts, we usually think of the supernatural. But in the psyche—and especially in Gothic literature—the ghost appears when a loss has not been processed, named, or mourned.

In this video, we explore the ghost as a psychic residue, a concept that connects with Carl Jung's Shadow, unresolved grief, and experiences that remain active in our unconscious.

From the perspective of the Gothic psyche, we understand the ghostly not as pathology, but as a symbolic language that emerges when something has not been integrated. Throughout the video, we discuss:

• what psychic residue is and its relationship to the Shadow
• the ghost in art and literature (from Guernica to Beloved)
• collective trauma and transgenerational echoes
• why Gothic literature is a safe symbolic space to work through loss without fear
• invisible grief and unrecognized experiences (prenatal loss, migration, illness, motherhood, life changes)

This content is part of my Gothic Psyche School of Thought, an educational and cultural project where death, absence, and the unspoken are addressed through symbolic language, not pathologization.
